The California State University system (CSU) and OpenAI have joined forces to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education by providing more than 460,000 students and over 63,000 staff and faculty with access to ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT customised for educational institutions. “It is the largest implementation of ChatGPT by any single organization or company anywhere in the world,” OpenAI announced on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

ChatGPT will be made available to campus users by invitation.  An invitation will be sent to users to be included in our workspace.  The current timeline is:

  • Invitation to Pilot Users - March 3rd, 2025
  • Invitation to TS Users - March 10th, 2025
  • Invitation to All Staff, Faculty - March 17th, 2025
  • Invitation to Students - TBD 

For Fresno State Students, Faculty, and Staff, there is no cost to you personally or your department for the plan purchased through the Chancellor's Office for all employees and students.

The CSU Chancellor’s Office has signed an 18-month (February 2025 - July 2026) contract for ChatGPT with an option to extend the agreement.

The CSU is providing ChatGPT Edu, a plan specifically built for universities to responsibly deploy AI to for active employees and students.  Limitations apply.

Yes, Fresno State’s ChatGPT Edu environment is private and secure, meaning all data remains private to the university. No information will be shared with OpenAI or other institutions for AI training. To keep everything safe, the CSU ChatGPT Edu plan includes advanced security measures like secure login, verified access, and strong encryption to protect information at all times.

The agreement with OpenAI ensures that ChatGPT interactions and data are not used to train their underlying large language models or improve their services.

Yes, the ChatGPT Edu plan allows institutions to build custom GPTs tailored to specific courses or administrative functions, which can be shared within the campus workspace to enhance learning and operational efficiency. Custom GPTs require the GPT-4o model.

Yes, OpenAI provides applications for iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS, allowing users to access ChatGPT across different devices. These applications also support platform-specific integrations.
